How to write and design a changelog page

A changelog proves a product is alive. Done well, it also brings back customers who left, answers support questions before they are asked, and gives search engines fresh pages about what you ship.

Short answer: post one dated entry per release, newest first. Lead each entry with what the user can now do, in one sentence, then add details and a picture or short clip. Group entries by month, tag them (New, Improved, Fixed) and give each its own link so you can share it and search engines can index it.

What should a changelog entry include?

  1. Date. Always visible; "last week" means nothing six months later.
  2. A title that names the benefit: "Export invoices to CSV", not "v2.14.0".
  3. One or two sentences on what changed and who it helps.
  4. A visual: a screenshot, a short clip or an illustration.
  5. A link to try it or read the docs.

How should changelog entries be written?

Write for customers, not for the team. Say "You can now" instead of "We refactored". Leave internal ticket numbers out. Small fixes can be grouped into one line ("Fixed: 12 smaller issues in billing"), but anything a customer asked for deserves its own line, so they see it was heard.

How often should you update a changelog?

As often as you ship something a customer would notice, and at least monthly. A changelog with a three-month gap reads as a product that stopped. If you ship daily, collect small changes into a weekly entry.

  • Give each entry a stable URL with a heading, so it can be linked and cited.
  • Use the words customers search: "dark mode", "CSV export", "Slack integration".
  • Keep it as HTML, not images of text or a third-party widget that loads after the page.
  • Mark the date in the page, so search engines and AI assistants can tell what is current.

Should you email changelog updates?

For bigger releases, yes: a short email with three to five highlights and a link to the changelog reminds past customers why they signed up. Keep the small fixes on the page.

Where can you get a changelog page template?

Liniqo’s pre-built pages include changelog pages with a hairline figure in place. See ours on the Liniqo changelog.

Yes, briefly. Group small fixes into one line, and name fixes that customers reported.

How long should a changelog entry be?

A title and one to three sentences, with a visual. Link to docs for the detail.

Does a changelog help SEO?

It can: each entry is fresh, specific content that matches feature searches, as long as it is crawlable HTML with dates.
