6 best hairline illustration libraries for UI/UX design in 2026

Thin-line illustration has become the calm, modern alternative to colourful flat art. Here is what hairline style is, why product teams like it, and six libraries worth looking at.

Liniqo is our library and sits first here; everything else is listed with its strengths, and the sources for prices and licences are at the bottom. The goal is to help you find a line style that fits your product, even if it is not ours.

What is hairline illustration?

Hairline illustration uses very thin, even strokes, usually close to one pixel at normal size, with little or no fill colour. Shapes are defined by their outlines, surfaces are left light or lightly tinted, and colour is saved for one accent. It sits between a technical drawing and an icon: detailed enough to show a scene, quiet enough to sit next to text and UI.

"Line" and "outline" illustration are broader terms that also cover thicker, hand-drawn or sketchy lines. Hairline is the thinnest, most precise end of that range.

Why product teams like line style

  • It does not fight the UI. Thin lines read like part of the interface, not a poster stuck on top of it.
  • It recolours cleanly. With few fills, changing the line and accent colours changes the whole look. See How to recolour SVG illustrations.
  • It works in dark mode. Swap dark lines for light ones and the drawing still reads. See Dark mode illustrations.
  • It animates well. Line drawings are perfect for the draw-on effect. See Animated SVG illustrations.
  • It stays small. Outline SVGs are usually tiny files.

Tips for using line illustrations well

  • Match stroke weight to your icons. If your UI icons use a 1.5px stroke, illustrations with 1 to 1.5px strokes at display size look like one family.
  • Do not scale too far. A hairline drawing scaled to 1000px can look faint, and one shrunk to 48px can lose detail. Check both ends.
  • Use one accent. Line style relies on restraint; one coloured part guides the eye.
  • Give them space. Thin lines need white space around them to read.
